He usually combines several different techniques and modalities to meet those preferences, goals and desires. If you are wanting just a simple relaxation massage, it can be done. 

Massage therapy is a practice that dates back thousands of years. There are many types of massage therapy, all involve manipulating the muscles and other soft tissues of the body. Massage therapy is complimentary (working with) and conventional (easily available) medicine (that which brings healing). The American Medical Massage Association (AMMA) defines massage as a system of manually applied techniques designed to reduce pain, establish normal tissue tension, create a positive tissue environment and to normalize the movement of the muscularskeletal system. Medical massage is scientifically based method of manual therapy that seeks a clear understanding of the scientific principles of physiology that affects the connective and soft tissues healing and treatment.

Scientists are studying massage to understand the effects massage therapy has on the patients/clients, how massage creates those effects and why. Some aspects of these studies are better understood than others. For example, it is known that:

- when certain forces are applied to the muscles, changes occur in the muscles.

- massage therapy typically enhances relation and reduces stress. Stress makes some diseases and conditions worse.

- massage provides stimulation that may help block pain signals sent to the brain.

-massage shifts the nervous system from the sympathetic system (prepared for action response) towards the parasympathetic system (the rest and digest response).

-stimulates the release of certain chemicals in the body (endorphins and serotonins).

-creates and causes beneficial mechanical changes to the body (breaks up scar tissues, increase of lymph fluid throughout the body, increase circulation)

-improve sleep, quality of rest (when the body heals)

-provides health benefits due to the interaction between patient/client and allied medical staff, including the massage therapist and primary care physician.

There are many different types and styles of massage, over 150 types. Most of them, the therapists presses, rubs and otherwise manipulates the muscles and other soft tissues of the body, often with varying pressures and movements. The therapist will often make use of tools, first and foremost, their hands, fingers, forearms, elbows, and/or feet. Typically, the intent is to relax the soft tissues to increase the delivery of blood and oxygen to the massaged areas, warm the area up and decrease the pain.

Massage treatments are typically booked in hour/ sixty minute sessions. Some sessions (either by need or preference) may last 1.5 (90 minutes) to 2 hours in length. Your sessions should always be in a safe and clean environment.

A person who is professionally providing massage therapy is often called a massage therapist. In California, a Certified Massage Therapist (CMT) holds credentials from the California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC.org) which is recognized by the state. Beyond this certification, each city has its own requirements in education and qualifications to be a massage practitioner. Other people within the health care industry who may also provide massage are Chiropractors, Nurses and Acupuncturists; all have training in massage therapy.
